Lion Tamer Costume

  • Jump ropes
  • Black duct tape
  • Sparkling bow ties
  • Adult carnival hat & vest set
  • Sequin assortment
  • Glitzy glitter fabric paint set
  • Hula hoop
  • Black duct tape
  • Scotch tape
  • Orange paper streamer
  • Yellow paper streamer

To make the whip:

  1. Undo the knots on two jump ropes, removing the plastic handles. Undo the knot on one end of the third rope and remove the plastic handle.
  2. Take the plastic handles and stack them into the remaining handle of the third jump rope.
  3. Tie the ends of the two jump ropes to the base of the third as close to the handle as you can. Braid the ropes loosely together leaving about six inches free at the bottom.
  4. Wrap a piece of duct tape to secure the bottom, leaving the remaining 6” of ropes free. Wrap the handle of the whip with more duct tape so that it is covered completely, including the knots at the beginning of the braid so that it is secure.

To make the vest, hat and bowtie:

  1. Using the fabric paint, “draw” a line along the black collar part of the carnival vest. Carefully place sequins one at a time on the line of paint and allow to dry.
  2. Use the fabric paint to “draw” a line along the red hat band and carefully place sequins one at a time on the line. Allow to dry.

To make the fiery hoop:

  1. Wrap hula hoop in duct tape until it is completely covered.
  2. Rip pieces of the paper streamers into varying sizes and tape each one along the hoop, leaving the ends free enough to flap like fire. Tape streamers along the top and bottom but leave one side free for your hands.
